Angel Reese Requests 10-Foot Statue in Chicago to Honor Her Historic WNBA Season

Angel Reese, the breakout star of the 2023 WNBA season, has announced her request for a monumental tribute to her historic rookie year. The 6-foot-3 forward, known for her dominant performances with the Chicago Sky, has made an ambitious and heartfelt appeal for a 10-foot statue to be erected in her honor at Chicago’s iconic Grant Park.

The statue, designed to capture the essence of Reese’s electrifying play, would depict her in a signature moment: bouncing the basketball—a gesture that has become symbolic of her powerful presence on the court.

A Historic Rookie Season

After being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft, Reese wasted no time making her mark. Her debut season with the Sky was a tour de force of athleticism, skill, and leadership, leading her team in scoring, rebounding, and defensive stats. Reese’s performance was so dominant that she quickly became a fan favorite in Chicago, as well as one of the most talked-about players in the league.

Reese averaged 17.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, and her high-energy style of play, combined with her unshakable confidence, made her one of the faces of the WNBA’s new wave of young talent.

Beyond the stats, Reese became known for her unique style—constantly hyping herself and her teammates while also captivating fans with her flair for the dramatic. Her basketball IQ and leadership on both ends of the floor helped propel the Sky to a playoff berth, and Reese’s growing star power cemented her as a central figure in the future of the league.

The Request for a Statue

Reese’s monumental request for a statue comes after widespread discussions about her future in the sport and the cultural impact she’s made in such a short time. The proposed statue would be a tribute not just to her on-court accomplishments, but also to her role as a trailblazer for women’s sports.

“I’ve always believed in leaving a lasting impact,” Reese said in an interview about her proposal.

“When you put in the work and give everything you have to the game, it’s about more than just personal accolades—it’s about inspiring the next generation. Chicago embraced me from day one, and I want this statue to represent the journey we’ve been on together.”

The statue, which would stand 10 feet tall, is to be a striking depiction of Reese in the midst of one of her signature plays—a dribbling move where she rhythmically bounces the ball with intensity, preparing to either explode toward the basket or set up her next calculated move.

The image is symbolic of Reese’s unpredictability on the court—never knowing what she’ll do next but always keeping opponents and fans alike on the edge of their seats.
